Part of the series Luminaries, Women of the Goldfields, this work emerges from my research into the women of Australia’s gold rush era. While history often records their hardships, I found myself wondering what unspoken rituals and folklore they may have carried with them into this new land.

I imagined women gathering in secret — to bless the earth, to share strength, to shed the strictures of their Victorian lives. Here, a circle of women rises together, channelling the power of the feminine spirit. Their unity is embodied by true friends, whose natural connection needed little direction from me.

The scene is both an act of remembrance and invention: a vision of “bush witches” who turn isolation into communion, and hardship into luminous resilience. It honours the strength and friendships immigrant women forged with one another — unseen, yet vital threads in the story of the Goldfields.

Catherine Anne Flood, my great-great-grandmother, arrived in Australia from Ireland aboard the Shooting Star—a name that already feels like a story in itself. Official records tell me only fragments: her occupation was listed as “housekeeper,” she married Wilhelm Dreschler, a German settler, and they raised a family in Sedgwick.

The details that truly fascinate me—the small gestures, the laughter, the fears, the longings—are lost to time. What did she dream of? What did she miss from home? How did she come to meet Wilhelm, and what drew them together? In the absence of these stories, I imagine her life. I see a woman brave enough to leave everything familiar behind, or desperate to escape the poverty and famine that shaped her childhood. I imagine her loving tea, finding comfort in small rituals, holding onto fragments of the life she left behind while forging a new one in a strange land.

Through the Luminaries series, I seek to honor not only Catherine Anne, but all the women whose lives were lived quietly, courageously, and without record. In imagining her, I feel a lineal connection across time—a recognition of strength, endurance, and the subtle, untold beauty of ordinary lives.

Ellen Randell Dreams of Wattle was a finalist in the Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize 2023, and forms part of the series Luminaries, Women of the Goldfields.

Each spring, when the wattle blooms, I think of Ellen. She was twenty, travelling home from Maryborough with her fiancé, when she paused to gather yellow blossoms from the roadside. It was the last thing she would ever see. Her fiancé, consumed by debt and despair, had planned his own death. In a final, unfathomable act, he stole Ellen’s life too.

History records her as a 19th-century victim of domestic violence, but she was more than that — a young woman in a new land, with her whole life ahead and a love of golden flowers.

Here, she is enveloped by wattle — luminous, reaching, eternal. I have finished the work with 23 karat gold, a glimmering thread back to the Goldfields, where both hope and devastation were unearthed. The blossoms become both memorial and dream, a place where beauty resists violence, and where Ellen’s presence lingers beyond the brutality of her ending. I want her name remembered, carried in light and bloom.

I guess when I really think about it, Alice is a version of me, and probably lots of you too. It’s the version I’m becoming. The curious, feisty woman who doesn’t care so much about berating her aging body, and eats the yummy cake without the side serve of guilt trip. Without the constant agony of imagining what other people think of her. Shove that cake in girlfriend. Life is too short to not love these wonderful jiggly vehicles we’ve rented to zip around Earth in.

Alice is no longer a carefully placed ornament or bauble amongst the still life; she is very much alive and embodying her wild feminine energy. Wind-swept, messy and (gasp) actually eating the cake in front of her, she throws her days of counting calories to the wind. We catch her in a moment in time when she’s chosen herself; chosen to rise above the limiting narratives given to her…decided that she can jolly well have her cake and eat it too. Let’s enjoy the butterflies that urge transformation, and the rabbit - not just a character in Wonderland, but a powerful symbol of fertility and rebirth for our peri menopausal heroine ‘

It all begins and ends with a dream.
Fairy tales have always been an inseparable part of our subconscious (I’ve always been obsessed) …they are woven into the fabric of human existence, whether we choose to acknowledge them or not. These archetypal characters carry more than magic; they serve as mirrors and guides, illuminating paths we may not yet see, if only we’re willing to look.
In the space between waking and sleeping is where we find our heroine. Maybe the apples are poisoned. Or perhaps she is simply drifting — toward a world far beyond our own.
The choice is always ours: victim or hero, villain or courage, helper or coward. Imagination leads us to adventure — but only if we’re brave enough to heed the call ❤️

Thomas O'Malley the alley cat - a sumptuous sea food banquet set before him. He is only interested in the little gold fish swimming around in chardonnay. What can we read into that? This image was a joy to create. All of the seafood was from a local dealer, as was the fruit and wine...the dishes are all odds and ends from mum's pantry, including my grandparents wedding platter and tablecloth.

In Dutch still life, a decadent seafood banquet was a symbol of high living. The dragonfly is a symbol of death (he's ready to devour the smaller insects) as of course is the skull. Cats and oysters can both be viewed as objects of lust and sexuality.

Winner of the Bluethumb ArtPrize, Photography 2021

Last year during lock down I became enamoured with Dutch still life, Vanitas and Memento Mori sentiments. I dreamt of creating my own ridiculously oversized floral ode to Dutch still life. All the beautiful blooms in this picture are from the fabulous Castlemaine Floristry. As well as rich florals, this artwork is thick with Vanitas-style meaning. Birds in still life represent the resurrection of the soul after death. The skull of course is a reminder of our mortality, and the crown - well you can't take it with you! The unlit candle marks the passing of time, the snails remind us to slow down. Large shells symbolise lust and beauty, therefore hinting at lust as a sin and the power of temptation. Also a sign of death and frailty, as shells were often once homes for a living animal. What else can you read into the image?

This still life was photographed in my studio. The king parrot was photographed in Trentham, and the little insects were photographed in various locations.

This is the second piece in my sunflower series. Adding pieces in to layer the artwork with storytelling. I love using motifs of memento mori and vanitas works. Enjoy the beauty of the world - we are only here for a short time. I also adore incorporating the animals/insects I find in the garden. The butterflies and moths are seeped in symbolism: life, death, transformation. The spider is a gentle presence, preying on the smaller bugs in the garden. The blue swallow stands apart from the scene, a symbol of patience and fortitude. The scotch and beautiful Dickens' books remind us to enjoy and relish earthly pleasures (in moderation :)

This is a photographic artwork. I photograph each element myself and then carefully bring everything together in post-production. I hand paint with light and shadow to give the rich, painterly feel to my work. I oversee the printing of each piece in the edition, printed by a master printer, and sign each artwork.

Chrysalis - to transform.

Citrus, butterflies and insects, rich colour palette and hidden meanings. Drawing inspiration from Dutch still life, where elements in an artwork had symbolic meaning. The citrus represents luxury, the bees hard work/ industriousness, the butterflies and chrysalis tell a story of life and death. Death teaches us to prioritise life. A lovely piece to ponder the big questions with over a morning coffee.
This is a photographic artwork. I photograph each element myself and then carefully bring everything together in post-production. I hand paint with light and shadow to give the rich, painterly feel to my work. I oversee the printing of each piece in the edition, printed by a master printer, and sign each artwork.

The main elements of this artwork were photographed in my studio. The oranges were picked from my mother's garden and arranged. The butterflies, bees, insects and cocoon I photographed in my garden and carefully added/layered to give the piece depth, meaning and a point of curiosity. It's quite challenging to get insects to pose in the studio :)

This still life is inspired by the Australian made pink botanical gin from Noble Bootleggers. They have commissioned a run of labels for their next batch. I love the Australian bush. Wildflower season in Victoria brings the landscape to life for months. The cheeky cockatoo and galah hiding in the flowers give the perfect amount of joy and humour. As with most of my work there is a world of tiny insects to find and enjoy.

Parts of this still life were photographed in my studio and part in nature, to disturb native flora and fauna as little as possible.
